Roots, from the Ground Up looks beyond the traditional idea that roots are simply connected to a birthplace, nationality, family, or a specific territory. Instead, it asks how we construct a sense of belonging through memory, experience, relationships, cultural transmission, and our relationship with places.
The four artists approach these questions from different personal and cultural perspectives, bringing together histories that are familial, ethnographic, historical, and personal. Their differences are not meant to be unified into one definition of identity; rather, the exhibition uses these differences to create a layered conversation about belonging, displacement, memory, identity, and the possibility of creating new roots.
